Focus on Architecture: Stories Behind the Photos

The Focus on Architecture photography competition will be starting up again soon. Visitors to the 7th Annual openhousenewyork Weekend, October 10 & 11, are invited to grab their cameras and focus on their favorite OHNY site or place. This year’s deadline for photo submissions will be Monday, October 26.

Last year, we received over 200 entries. OHNY’s panel of professional judges chose their three favorite photos in four categories and also awarded three judges awards in the following:

  • building interiors
  • exteriors
  • details
  • people

We will be highlighting winning photographs from 2008 during the next few weeks, along with the story behind the photo. This week’s photo was taken by Laura Manzari at Grand Central Terminal and was selected as a winner in the details category.

Laura writes:

“I love New York architecture and the OHNY Weekends.  In law school, when everyone else wanted to do their internships at the big firms, I wanted to do mine at Landmarks Preservation.  On my first day they had me read all the cases related to the landmarking of Grand Central, so it’s always held a special charm for me.  The south façade and the interior are on such a grand scale;  however, the east façade is on a human scale and has this fun detail.  What could be more New York than a surprising rat!  It’s very clever the way they seem to be climbing a rope to a ship and have come up against the rat guard.  An added benefit of the visit to Grand Central was that the interior of the Chrysler Building was right across the street.”
