Support NYC’s largest celebration of architecture and design, during the 9th Annual openhousenewyork Weekend, October 15 & 16, 2011.

Site selection for the Annual Weekend has begun, and we encourage you to recommend a space, place or an interior of architectural, design or historical interest that the public can visit for free during OHNY Weekend.

Sites throughout all five boroughs are welcomed and encouraged! If you have information regarding a site, tour, lecture or workshop for 2011, please contact OHNY with details at info@ohny.org.

8th Annual OHNY Weekend Preview:
architecturemoves

The Ukrainian Institute of America hosts the Tze Chun Dance Company’s theatrical performance “Parlor Games.” Drawing inspiration from traditional parlor games of the late 19th-century, the company incorporates the physicality and humor of these games into dance.

Perennial favorite Angels and Accordions by Dance Theatre Etcetera returns to The Green-Wood Cemetery. The cemetery’s rolling hills and woods come to life in this site-specific performance by dancers and accordion players.

Stop by the New York Marble Cemetery and stay for a performance organized by the Natasa Trifan Performance Group. Drawing upon the Greek myth of the Minotaur and Daedalus’s labyrinth, the choreography utilizes the cemetery’s space as labyrinth with music from Benjamin Britten’s operas.

8th Annual OHNY Weekend Preview:
Performance Spaces

Stop by world-renowned Mark Morris Dance Center, directly across from BAM. Designed by Beyer Blinder Belle Architects, the Center houses seven rehearsal spaces, a theater, performance space and a school for students. They have collaborated with Yo-Yo Ma, Zaki Hussain and The Metropolitan Opera, among others.

Get the backstage tour of a legendary hot bed for contemporary performance. Housed in what was once an abandoned public school, transformed by “Fame” and legions of artists, Performance Space 122 shares three decades of performance lore and East Village history.

One of the world’s first performing arts facilities designed specifically for jazz performances, education and broadcast, Frederick P. Rose Hall is the home of Jazz at Lincoln Center. The facility is comprised of two concerts halls, a jazz club, education center, and much more.

8th Annual OHNY Weekend Preview:
NYC Parks

Explore Brooklyn Bridge Park from Pier 1 to Pier 6, including future sections of this remarkable 85-acre waterfront park. The park planners will highlight the sustainable aspects of the park’s design and reveal areas currently off-limits to the public.

Take a look at the currently off-limits, northernmost section of The High Line, the historic, elevated rail viaduct in Manhattan partially renovated and reopened as public city park in 2009.

Discover Teardrop Park South, with bluestone water features and seat-level bluestone slabs. Wooden bleachers offer a perch for performances and everyday relaxation while three heliostats track the sun, and reflect sunlight into the Park.

8th Annual OHNY Weekend Preview:
South Bronx

Stop by 491 Fletcher Street and take an architect-led construction tour of the building described as a “wall around a garden.” Learn about their state of the art sustainable technologies including a green wall, innovative shading and insulation techniques, energy efficient heating/cooling systems and waste heat recapture.

Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education invites visitors to come explore their new 90,000 square foot educational and cultural center, designed by RMJM. The building is home to the organization as well as a NYC public school, gallery and performance space.

Discover the DreamYard Art Center, the largest arts education provider in the Bronx. This creative, artistic and educational laboratory uses the arts as a tool to support children in defining their futures. Bring your family to DreamYard’s Family Architecture Workshop and Tour: Morrisania, where kids will walk and sketch the neighborhood with teaching architect Ann deVere.

Last Chance to Enter OHNY Raffles

There is still time to enter the Behind the Scenes at the Woolworth Raffle and the Philippe Starck’s Kong Chair by Emeco Raffle, with a donation of $20 or more! Raffles close tonight, at 10 pm, and winners will be announced on Friday, October 16.

Ten winners will receive two tickets to an exclusive, behind the scenes tour of the Woolworth Building on Saturday, November 14 at 5 pm with resident historian Roy Suskin and Gail Fenske, author of The Skyscraper and the City: The Woolworth Building and the Making of Modern New York. Tour stops included Frank Woolworth’s original office, the 43rd floor observation deck and the indoor swimming pool, and includes drinks on the terrace at sunset.

Visual Acoustics Premiere

OHNY and The Architect’s Newspaper host a special film premiere of VISUAL ACOUSTICS, a documentary on the life and career of Julius Shulman, at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art’s new academic building designed by Thom Mayne of the Los Angeles firm Morphosis.

Co-sponsored by The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture of The Cooper Union, the film will be introduced by director, Eric Bricker, and the screening is followed by a private reception. Proceeds from the event will go directly to support and sustain OHNY programming.

7th Annual OHNY Weekend Preview:
Brooklyn Walking Tours

Litchfield Villa & Prospect Park

Join architectural historian Francis Morrone for a tour of Prospect Park’s Litchfield Villa, an Italianate-style country home built in 1857 by renowned architect A.J. Davis. The Villa stands on a hilltop with beautiful views of Long Meadow, the Gowanus Canal, and New York Harbor. Visit the Villa’s roof, interior spaces and surrounding environs.

Coney Island Talking Boardwalk

Clues to the former glory of Coney Island are woven into its current community. Learn about the social and physical architecture of Coney Island when it was the world’s most influential amusement area and the essence of American pop culture, on a tour led by Rich Garr of Gotham SideWalks.

Red Hook

Explore the transformations of Red Hook, from center of maritime trade to devastated inner city, to scenic, commercially revitalized village, with Walking Brooklynauthor Adrienne Onofri. 7th Annual OHNY Weekend Preview:
Theaters

Apollo Theater

Constructed in Harlem in 1914 and most recently renovated in 2005, The Apollo Theater is on the National Registry of Historic Places. The venue has served as the launching point for some of the country’s most talented African American performers, including Bessie Smith, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, James Brown, Lauryn Hill, and countless others. As of 2009, the Theater operates as a non-profit and draws 1.3 million visitors annually.

Radio City Music Hall

Learn about the restoration and renewal of one of the nation’s most famous theaters, Radio City Music Hall. Hugh Hardy, Principal of H3 Hardy Collaboration Architecture, will lead an intimate tour of the Art-Deco masterpiece and discuss the extensive restoration effort aimed at updating the infrastructure and returning the theater to its original glory.

The Wild Project

As New York City’s first “green” theater, The Wild Project utilizes low-flush toilets, solar panels, organic concessions, and even houses a 1,500-sq-ft thriving green roof. This gut renovation of an existing one-story manufacturing building transformed a makeshift theater into an 89-seat community-friendly performance space on the Lower East Side.
