OHNY Auction Highlight: FXFOWLE Architectural Tour of the Bronx Zoo Lion House and Center for Global Conservation

At this year’s Annual Benefit, OHNY will be hosting its first ever live auction, with various items including one-of-a-kind art pieces and exclusive tours. Items are now up for online bidding!

Take a look at item #111: FXFOWLE Architectural Tour of the Bronx Zoo Lion House and Center for Global Conservation.

The winner will get a private architectural tour of two of the Bronx Zoo’s most innovative and green buildings – the Lion House and the Center for Global Conservation – led by Sylvia Smith, FAIA, LEED, Senior Partner at FXFOWLE ARCHITECTS and Sue Chin, Vice President of Planning and Design & Chief Architect for the Wildlife Conservation Society.

Originally designed by Heins & LaFarge in 1903, the Lion House is situated at the heart of the Zoo’s historic Astor Court. In June 2008, the Wildlife Conservation Society rededicated the spectacular architectural legacy of the Lion House building as the site of a magnificent new exhibit, Madagascar! FXFOWLE’s design has adapted the Beaux Arts building for the functional demands of the future and incorporated new advances in animal welfare, visitor experience, conservation awareness, and science education.

Additionally, the building carries the distinction of being the first landmark building in New York City to achieve LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. The new LEED Gold certified Center for Global Conservation (CGC) is the headquarters of the international programs of the Wildlife Conservation Society.

Three mandates guided FXFOWLE’s design of the building: sensitively integrate the building with its site; foster a greater sense of occupant well-being through strong connections to nature, and minimize energy and resource use. The CGC embodies the Wildlife Conservation Society’s mission of preserving wildlife and wild lands, and makes a powerful statement of conservation through architecture. It is a true reflection of environmental, social, and economic sustainability.
